Candidate: Kevin Martens

Bio: Hi, my name is Kevin Martens, I teach at Clearspring Middle, and I am running for the position of President of HTA. I have been teaching in Hanover for 32 years, all at the middle school level. I started at the old Steinbach Junior High and moved over to be part of the team that opened a new school at Clearspring 9 years ago. I was President of HTA in 1999 and that began a long run of four consecutive rounds of being involved in contract negotiations. I returned 5 years ago as the Chair of our Bargaining committee to lead us through the contract negotiations that we are presently in.
Electoral Statement: I have always had a desire to support my fellow teachers in whatever way I possibly can. I believe in a team based approach, whether that be in the classroom or the bargaining table, and I would bring that mindset to this position as well. Over the years our teaching staff in Hanover has doubled and the range of issues that teachers face continues to grow. Sometimes there is a lot of “noise” going on outside of the classroom for us that affects our ability to teach. The Education Review and recent legislation could create a lot of “noise” for us in the coming years and I would like to be able to guide us through it, to ensure that you can concentrate on your job in the classroom and workplace. As well, if I win this election or not, Bill 45 legislation will make me the last Bargaining Chair that our Association has as we move into provincial bargaining. As President, I would be able to closely consult with MTS to ensure that our interests are looked after as a new Provincial model of bargaining is created.
I would appreciate your vote!
